Kimberly Elam, 24-year-old owner of Kimmer’s Ice Cream in St. Charles, is recipient of a Entrepreneurial Excellence Award from the Daily Herald Business Ledger. Elam was recognized as one of two Young Entrepreneurs in the 13th Annual Awards program. She will be recognized at a reception on September 20 in Addison.
Elam, known to family and friends as “Kimmer,” grew up in Batavia and worked at a local ice cream shop during her years at Batavia High School and during breaks in college. A member of the Batavia High School golf and women’s soccer and volleyball teams, Kimberly credits her sports and early work life with giving her an appreciation for teamwork, responsibility, dedication, competitive spirit and a strong work ethic.
A University of Iowa graduate, she studied English and Entrepreneurship and attended Malcolm Stogo’s Ice Cream University before purchasing the former Gramps Frozen Custard Shop in St. Charles in October 2010.
In addition to creating over fifty classic and gourmet homemade ice cream flavors, including Red Velvet Cake, Cookie Monster, Maple Bacon, Ricotta and Fig, Parent Trap and Aztec Hot Chocolate, Elam recently trademarked the Sparkle Cone™, popular with kids and adults alike, after nearly a year in development. Homemade Ice Cream Cakes and Pies, chocolate-dipped waffle bowls, pretzel cones and massive chocolate-chip cookie ice cream sandwiches have also proved popular. A few Kimmer’s flavors are available at select gourmet groceries including the Blue Goose in St. Charles, Casey’s Foods in Naperville and Standard Market in Westmont, as well as on the menu at a few local restaurants and special events.
In the first year in business, Elam was named among the 30 under30 young business people honored by the Fox Valley Tri Cities Chambers of Commerce in November of 2011. Kimmer’s also received a People’s Choice Award by the Kane County Chronicle in April of this year, less than a year after Grand Opening. Elam was featured on the cover of Kane County Magazine this August. She is an avid contributor to Tri-City Family Services and the Living Well Cancer Resource Center and will again dedicate a portion of sales to the Center during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.
Open every day, Kimmer’s Ice Cream is located in Fox Island Square, 1 West Illinois, in Downtown St. Charles.
